Hi Mary! I think it’s from a Luna Moth wing. One of nature’s masterpieces!

    Some kind of buckeye moth?

I’m really commenting to ask if you got my e-mail about the heron rookery, in case I don’t have a current address for you.

There seem to be a lot more luna moths this year than usual. Anyone else have that impression? Why would that be?

One winter years ago I found a large cocoon in the woods. I put it in a terrarium in my unheated garage, so it wouldn’t emerge during cold weather. One day months later, when the weather was warmer, we noticed three or four luna moths on the outside wall near the peak of the garage, near a vent. I checked inside to discover that a luna moth had recently emerged from the cocoon. (Quiz: what was the sex of all of these moths?)

I just heard from friends near Ely, Minnesota, that a lot of lunas are being seen out there as well. I wonder why the “outbreak” this year?

Isn’t that the star of the “Lunesta” commercials? I’d recognize her anywhere! A friend saw 4 of them on a barn the other day!!!
