10-3-14 loon on fall water IMG_0386

Go, sit upon the lofty hill,
And turn your eyes around,
Where waving woods and waters wild
Do hymn an autumn sound.
The summer sun is faint on them —
The summer flowers depart —
Sit still — as all transform’d to stone,
Except your musing heart.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1883

    • Yes, it’s a common loon, Rita. In the right light, its neck is an irridescent green.

What a beautiful convergence of the first sun the Boston area has seen in what feels like days, crisp fall air, your glorious loon swimming in autumn colors-reflected water and Browning’s poem (written in 1833)! Thank you for the pleasure you bring your many fans on daily basis!!

I found you via a friend in my old Norwich days! Surprise, my dear college friend ! I always love to see a loon as I spent my summers at my great-grandfather’s place on totally private land thus all animals presented as never seeing a human being! One am while skinney-dipping as I did every am, I had the gift of joining a group of loons who let me be 2′ from them.
