I might be missing something here and have gone terribly astray but it looks to me like a birch tree peering out into this wondrous world and forgot to clean her glasses from the lichen that is starting to grow on them

What a great mystery! I’m with the bees/skunk crowd but doubtful you can see skunk spray, AND you’d have to be pretty close to get such perfect little circles. Can’t wait for the answer….

Hi Mary… I’m inclined to concur with the other’s guesses, looks like you may have attempted to get a little too friendly with a skunk.
I hope you had plenty of tomato juice on hand, but most importantly, did you get the shot?
When I think of it, I’ll leave you a shot of a skunk having a ” bad hair day ” down in my lower fields. I got within 20 feet of it & the tail never went up! In fact when I tried moving closer it dropped down into a chuck hole.

I’ll go out on a limb, and say a beaver? Did it splash muddy water on you with its tail? And if we saw the entire branch on which your glasses are sitting, would we see that it’s been chewed by a beaver too? Or maybe I’m reading too much into it, and you just got skunked!

My buddy, Tony Maniscalco believes it’s skunk. That’ got my vote! Personally, I enjoy the fragrance of skunk, though no one believes me when I say that. Hope you tolerated it well, at least.

my first thought was a garter snake, but I don’t know how you would get that all over your glasses, unless you were trying to take a picture of its tail.

I’d say a ground beetle too… Clearly you were VERY close up, as the droplets are direct hits, not splash, and look pretty well directed!! BTW, I wear identical specs — glad to know they serve so well as protective goggles! (If this was a Bombardier beetle, that’s a pretty rough brew!!)
