“Naturally Curious” Blog Celebrates Seven Years!

4-4-17 - loons 203Seven years ago today, after my book Naturally Curious was published, this blog made its debut.  Since then, close to 2,000 posts (initially there were 7 posts a week) have appeared.  They have produced one book (Naturally Curious Day by Day), many questions, comments and exchanges, new friends, generous donations and hopefully new insight into this magical world of ours.  Thank you all for seven very rewarding years.

Naturally Curious is supported by donations. If you choose to contribute, you may go to and click on the yellow “donate” button.

Amazing body of sensitive work watching our world! Well done. I meant to tell you yesterday that that was the best blog ever. You defined & explained a serious crisis that is occurring, but not really understood by many, and sadly not believed by all. >

Mary Since getting your wonderful book we’ve used it as reference FREQUENTLY. Ever since, we’ve been enjoying AND LEARNING FROM your daily posts. Congratulations and please keep it up. Don’t forget the Danbury Bog. Two geese flew over yesterday morning and landed on the snow-covered ice to the south of us. Yesterday, before dusk, something was sitting on the edge of the ice below the dam. Not sure but we think it was an otter. It slipped into the water before we could run for the binoculars.
Been meaning to send you pictures of hemlock tips that have mystified us all winter, scattered on the surface of the snow by the hundreds. They are about two inches long, intact on the tips but obviously nipped or otherwise separated at the “butt” ends.

Best wishes hoping you and Emma are in good health

Mary, I am entirely grateful for your dedication to field study – getting to know place – and disseminating natural history information and telling photos on a daily basis to a broad population! We all get to know our surrounding world a it better and connect more deeply because of your inspiring passion and desire to share what you know, encounter, and learn.

My 9 year old daughter loves Naturally Curious (we’ve poured over it for hours over time) as well as your blog when I show it to her . And so do I! Between Naturally Curious and your daily posts, I am inspired and learn much!

I am at work at North Branch Nature Center in Montpelier with my window cracked (even though it’s cool and drizzling), listening to the first Song Sparrows and Dark eyed Junkos with an uplifted spirit! After winter in March, it’s lovely to think of fellow curious VT community members whose spirits may also be uplifted by bird song today and all that you offer us.

    Thanks you.

Mary, like all the others above, I can’t thank you enough for your wonderful blog and your wonderful books. My only regret is that I was not there on Day 1! But as the springtime begins to burgeon, I am imagining that long-ago April day when you posted your first superb photo and commentary, and how you could not have known the scope of what you were beginning in your own life and in ours. First steps take courage. Reading about the anniversary this morning I thought of Wilbur’s Charlotte: “She was in a class by herself. It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte (Mary!) was both.”
