I think a mud dauber wasp collecting mud. I wonder why she left her nice mud ball behind. Did you disturb her, Mary?

is it the remains of a solitary wasp which has hatched, pushed out the mud ball covering its hole, and emerged from the ground?

Could it be ground bees, who maybe got flooded out from too much rain?

Mud Puppy or a salamander? ( probably not ) The above comments stating mud wasp sounds plausible me thinks…

Hi Mary, I’m new to your blog and I am not finding any confirmation of correct answers on the mystery photos. Am I missing something? Your latest one is driving me nuts because I had these, or very similar, tracks in my yard and would very much like to know what might have made them. A lot of commenters are says turkey, but no one has definitively confirmed this is correct.

      • Hi Joe,
The answer to every mystery photo is the following post (posts are Monday, Wednesday and Friday). So yesterday’s tracks will be identified tomorrow. I used to state this and I will resume doing so, so that new readers know that the answer will be provided soon!

Black and Yellow Mud Dauber is my guess, although I have not seen the ball left behind before. Cool!

Eager to find out. markings in mud seem insect-like. I can’t figure out if the sphere I am supposed to be seeing is in the center of the photo or buried in the mud. Thanks for these mystery photos!
