Thank you to my Naturally Curious reader family for your warm responses to the news about Emma and Greta. I live alone, so my dog is a very big part of my life. I am so lucky to have both Greta and you to share my discoveries with.

Beautiful dogs. So glad to hear you explore with your dog. My two Golden’s are always with me on my hikes and I wonder if they scare away the wildlife I seek but I can’t imagine going without without them.

Dogs are the best companions! I’m so sorry for your loss of Emma and happy that Greta is with you now. She’s a lucky girl to get to hang out with you outside for so much of every day. Be well, Mary, and thanks for all your wonderful posts.

  8. Your story is not all that unique and an inspiration to many of us; women in their later years forging new paths and connections to the natural world with our canine companions as willing participants and teachers. I, too, recently lost my beloved companion and am now accompanied by yet another joyful spirit (just as your Greta) to continue this adventure called life. And while our time together is always too short, it is never without its rewards.

    • I’m so sorry about Lucy, Fred. Losing your pet leaves such a big hole. I hope it mends relatively quickly, though we always miss them, don’t we?

Hi Mary, Just caught up with thad news that Emma has passed on. I remember her well from the time I brought the Camel Crickets to your house for identification. The sad news is tempered by the addition of Greta. She looks like a real winner and I know you two will have a great relationship.

    Warm regards,

    Mike

How wonderful and “ good for you” for giving another dog the chance to live with you as you romp on through this amazing life of yours. And a blessing for you to have Greta.

Dear Mary, We love your posts! And we love labs– I have an old and very sick yellow lab lying at my feet right now. We switched from black labs to yellow when the ticks moved up to Vermont.

Have you thought about doing a post on different types of ice we find around us? Anchor ice, drum ice, ice coming from cliffs, ice on the ground even in the woods…. Might be cool!

    Best, Robin Barone

    • Your ice idea is a great one, Robin! I will have to educate myself on it, and find some good specimens to photograph!

Dear Mary, I am so sorry to hear that you lost Emma. Our family recently lost a loving, rescue dog of 14 yr. who loved exploring the mountains in Canada. Such wonderful companions truly become a part of the family, but now you and Greta will carry on.

Where did you get your beautiful Emma?

    February 12, 2018 at 3:02 pm

    • Emma came from a breeder in Tunbridge, VT who no longer breeds labs, unfortunately. Greta came from a wonderful breeder in Andover, NH. She had had two C-sections, so they decided not to try and breed her again.
