New Children’s Book Released

YODEL THE YEARLING book cover for blogLast April I had the rare opportunity to observe and photograph a wild female Black Bear and her three yearlings in New Hampshire woods shortly after they had emerged from hibernation. Somewhat habituated to humans, they allowed me to sit and watch them sleep, play, mock-fight, and best of all, nurse. These activities and more are recorded in my most recent children’s book, Yodel the Yearling, which has just been released. The book contains photographs of these bears and their antics as well as the many signs that can tell you if Black Bears are inhabiting your woods! What 3 to 8-year-old doesn’t like a good bedtime bear story?

To order from the publisher, go to Naturally Curious blog (www.naturallycuriouswithmaryholland.wordpress.com) and click on Yodel the Yearling book cover on right hand side. Also available from independent bookstores and online.

I forwarded this to Jill Robinson at AnimalsAsia because she is doing her best to save the back and moon bears being hed in crush cages in China. If you do not know AnimalsAsia please find out about it and help Jill correct the HORRIBLE conditions under which these bears exist. Watch “Cages of Shame” on the AnimalsAsia websit and you wi never be the same and might even take on the bear cause yourself.

Why is no credit given to Ben Kilham without who you would have been able to make your observations???????

    February 23, 2018 at 11:04 am

    • While I am a great fan of Ben Kilham, and indebted to him for his gift of a bear skull and fecal plug and den visits, he had nothing to do with the photography in this book. These were wild bears, and not his released bears, which I tracked and found myself.

What a fun sounding book — and it must have been even more entertaining to observe the bears doing what bears do. Congratulations, Mary!

Mary, I visited the Montshire Museum of Science the other day with my son and grandson. Really enjoyed seeing so many of your photographs on the wall. A great place to visit and to see young children enjoying learning more about the natural world. Thanks for your part. Rob

Dear Mary Holland ~ I’ve just tried to order your Day by Day book, as your email said it was soon going out of print. BUT I hit a dead end when I got to Rowman publishers, and kept getting the message that the page did not exist (or some such). Please help! I’d really like to order a copy of the book. Thanks ~ Dede Heath (aka Edith Kearney)

    • Hi Dede,
Just so you know, it isn’t Naturally Curious Day by Day that’s going out of print, it’s my original Naturally Curious book. You should be able to click on the cover and it will take you to the publisher, Trafalgar Square Books. If not, you can order it from any independent bookstore (if they don’t have it) or online on Amazon, etc. I’ll have to check out the Day by Day link. So sorry!
