Mystery Photo
Do you recognize the spotted jelly-like blob on the lower right leaf of this Turtlehead (Chelone glabra) plant? If so (or even if you want to make a wild guess), go to the Naturally Curious blog (www.naturallycuriouswithmaryholland.wordpress.com), scroll down and click on “Comments” to submit your entry. Look for the answer in the next Naturally Curious post. (Hint: Turtlehead likes its feet damp.)

Perhaps an amphibian egg cluster. Seems late for that. Baltimore checkerspot likes turtlehead—don’t know if it lays clustered eggs.

😁 I’m happy that I recognized ‘Turtlehead’ I think eggs from some kind of a ‘water-bug’…no guesses which. I don’t think a slug, eggs would be bigger.

It’s a caddisfly egg mass. The larvae hatch out inside then drop into the water below.

Hi there, I agree. If it was a slime mould it would leave a trail behind it. This doesn’t seem to have traveled anywhere. Good call!

Snail eggs??

It reminds me of long, stringy, gelatinous egg masses (we assume) that we see floating on ponds early summertimes. I don’t mean toad eggs… the specks we see in the masses look like tiny grains, as in your photo. But I have no idea what mama lays them.

Too late for amphibians, so some kind of water bug egg mass, where larva drop into water below when they hatch. No idea what kind! I look forward to the answer. Thanks for the great quiz!!

My guess for the jelly-like blob on the turtlehead plant is frog eggs.

If turtleheads are respond to this extreme heat as I do it probably vomited on it’s own leaf.

I think the caddisfly egg mass in the above comments will be the correct answer. I was thinking dragonfly but decided that is to simple for this simple mind! lol…
I have seen this before when in the field and down at the pond…
Thanks Mary, never a dull moment!

Yeah! Snail, slime! I guess perhaps with eggs in it!

I have seen this mass before and it was laid on a leaf above water and if I remember it is Caddisflies eggs. They have to drop into the water I think and then emerge from there.

frog eggs, or salamander?

caddisflies eggs. Love your emails.
August 29, 2018 at 4:39 pm
My guess is that it’s a slug since it has antennae, but I don’t know which kind.
