a hungry bear….
December 2, 2019 at 8:26 am
I had similar holes and could not guess, but, given the acorn hint, perhaps a skunk or racoon (both live here, too) raiding a cache ? But I have never imagined a cache to contain so many acorns ?? !!

I agree with Louise.

Black bear discovering a squirrel cache of acorns and getting excited about it!
December 2, 2019 at 8:31 am
Fox?
December 2, 2019 at 8:33 am
I’m guessing a bear, maybe going after the acorns buried by something else like a squirrel.
We see this often when bears (or skunks) go after ground wasp nests.
December 2, 2019 at 8:35 am
I think a bear did this, judging by the depth of the hole and the footprints leading away from it. But I’ve never heard of bears caching food. And why are there so many uneaten acorns if they were what the bear was after?

Black bear dug up chipmunk stash?
December 2, 2019 at 8:42 am
I first guessed coyotes digging up chipmunks. Then I saw the bear comments. I did not think bear because they would stop at the acorn stash and it looks like they worked for a meal of meat. But that could be it. The tracks could be the person’s but if not, then bear. Not knowing the time of year makes it challenging. Thanks for the post! I love thinking about mysteries.

A dog looking for his bone.
December 2, 2019 at 8:54 am
Way too big for woodchuck, which are probably asleep anyway. From the size of the dirty tracks leading away, I’m going to say bear.
December 2, 2019 at 8:55 am
I’m thinking bears…deep hole and acorns????
December 2, 2019 at 8:59 am
I think a skunk
December 2, 2019 at 9:08 am
I believe it’s from a dog or two who have caught the scent of a squirrel and it’s cache of acorns. The squirrel must be in a tree not far away scolding the dogs.

You have the best mystery photos!
December 2, 2019 at 9:29 am
I want it to be a badger… too bad we don’t have them here… But seriously, I think it’s a bear going after a cache left by a squirrel… would the squirrels leave acorns in such a deep hole though? I agree with Susan C., I love thinking about these mysteries.

Coyote getting into a cache
December 2, 2019 at 12:16 pm
Coyote digging up acorns that squirrels hid/buried?
December 2, 2019 at 12:30 pm
I don’t think squirrel would have acorn cache in the open area like this, or so deep, so guessing it was something digging up a chipmunk stash. Very large hole. Going with bear. Think coyote or fox would have given up sooner and hole would be more narrow.

B4 reading any comments, my assumption was a black bear judging by the size of the hole.
I see a large cache of acorns immediately around the hole too. However, skunks can do this too. I’ll stick with the bear…
Bill… :~)

it’s a squirrel. They do dig holes to bury their acorns, and there’s no reason why that wouldn’t be one, with the acorns around it
