    • I agree–at least some kind of turtle. The tracks on the sides are interesting, too.

Nice photo of tracks! I’m thinking it was a snapping turtle on her way to or from egg laying.

I was thinking a snake…reading comments, I’m not sure. I’d think a snapper would leave deeper prints. So: undecided.

Snapping turtle tracks from the females who have come out of the ponds to lay eggs on land. Love seeing the tail tracks as well as the claws on either side. The snapping turtles are now finished laying eggs in my local pond in Rochester, NY, and many of their nests have already been dug up by foxes, minks, raccoons, and other predators.

I’ll go with the peggythebaker response. I think she knows what she is talking about as I consistently FAIL at guessing… It is indeed a wide impression into the mud with the drag mark that of a tail… Snapping turtle it is!

  27. Mary, I’ve tried twice to make a donation via the link below. “Safari can’t find the server.” Maybe it’s only my problem, and not a general access problem.

    • Hi Anne, I appreciate both your trying to make a donation and your letting me know it isn’t working. Have you tried going directly to the website and clicking on “donate?” WordPress makes it very hard for the person doing a blog to have any say in the mechanics of how it works, but I would like to try and contact them if you are still having trouble. Many thanks. My email address is .

    to me

No I am not sure on snapping turtle seems likely. But. The tail is not dragging straight. And I believe they usually do. The mud is pushed from one side to the other. I believe it’s a fish. I can’t remember the name. They have them in Florida. And when the torrential rains come out they walk down the streets on their fins. And I believe their tail would make these type of marks. More like a keel in the mud than a tail
