Turkey Post
I received an comment from a reader who took offense at my “#MeToo” reference in today’s turkey post and felt it was insensitive to the issue of sexual abuse. I (perhaps mistakenly) associate “#MeToo” with the increasing power of women, not specifically with sexual abuse and my photo was an attempt to humerously reflect this. All I meant to infer with the photograph was the hen turkey’s power to choose between three toms to mate with, instead of vice versa. My apologies to anyone I might have offended.
I took it as you meant it, Mary.

Mary,
I thought it was a great post. I understood what you were trying to get across. Nicely done.

I got it the way you meant it, Mary, and enjoyed the sentiment and the chuckle. I look at the female and think, “She doesn’t even look the least bit overwhelmed!” Great photo.

Without humor we are a sorry lot…I was once a victim, now I am a student and have seen how my experience can benefit others.

I loved it! Took no offense.

I laughed out loud. No matter what “Don Juan” thinks, the ladies always make the choice.

Loved the turkey photo, Mary! Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for all you give to your faithful readers!

Mary, I, for one, think your turkey post was hilarious and uplifting and it made me smile. I’m a 76 year old female Vermonter who could write a book about the times and the ways I have been targeted by men. All I can say is, that reader who was offended needs to work on a sense of humor. Anyone who knows you is aware that you would never, ever intentionally offend another. As we work to raise our awareness of how our words and actions can unintentionally cause offense or hurt, we also need to be forgiving of ourselves and others when we slip up. Let’s not stop communicating because we are afraid to speak. I certainly understood your post as you intended.

I got a real chuckle from the photo. Sad if anyone took offense to it.

Good, I’m glad someone else took offense at the crafty little #metoo barb. I’ve just unsubscribed to your letter as much as I’ve enjoyed it.
Please educate yourself about the hideous danger of the #metoo movement. Nobody in their right mind would endorse this Marxist filth.

Some of us have had it to the gills with the horrors of political correctness and Leftist communism, socialism, and the evil of globalism. Whomever you offended needs to lighten up. Classic example of over sensitivity to things, and another episode of PC gone wrong. Sorry this happened to you.

Very good post, Mary! Surely no negative interpretations taken. We have sometimes had the turkeys coming in under the bird feeders and watched with great interest and amusement the antics of the Toms and hens.

No offense on my part. I am a “metoo” person for sure, and would instinctively know that you were as well. All your posts reflect a sensitivity, a sensibility, that would reflect justice in all realms, salamander, monarch butterfly , grandchild, women, female turkey. .. .I am grateful for this attention to women in this time, and grateful for all you bring forth in your eye on the natural world.
I celebrate you.

I loved the turkey photo and found it rather humorous! I’m afraid some of the younger generation get bent out of shape at the darndest things and are too sensitive, always looking at their navel. Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

Just weighing in here to say, as a woman, a mother of a girl and someone who has been preyed upon countless times by certain predator men, I appreciated your metoo photo and took it as women’s empowerment and I love how she looks neither impressed nor intimidated by the 3 males vying for her attention. Thank you for your blog. It is one of the few that has nothing to do with my business that I read every single day. I love your tidbits of information to fulfill my naturally curious nature. Happy Thanksgiving.

Your comment at the bottom of the great turkey photo was totally fine. And the hen does have the power to choose between the flamboyant, puffy, aggressive and competing males prancing in front of her.
I’ve seen three males doing the same thing in our back yard and it’s pretty funny seeing them shimmy, shake, gobble, flap their wings and dance trying to get the hens attention, who appear to care less as they feed on cracked corn that I put out. The only thing missing are bad one liners (but of course in turkey talk, they may have them).

No offense taken. Loved photo and your comment. #MeToo movement is about a wide range of offensive and disrespectful behaviour toward (mostly) female humans by (mostly) powerful men. Such a complex scope of meanings. Keep up the good work. I am Thankful for Naturally Curious every day. Happy Thanksgiving, Rodrica

DONâT apologize! I am a progressive person, but Iâm sick and tired of intolerant, self-satisfied people who try to impose their personal sensitivities on others. They often, as here, see things that are not there while purposely trying to shame and make someone else feel uncomfortable. Not enough real life experience, would be my guess, or simply unable to keep their mouth shut when they should. That kind of thinking and trying to force conformity is exactly whatâs wrong with the âother side.â

As a woman and one who has used #metoo I take no offence to you using that tag. I think that we are in times of great divide and there is little grey area left at this point of our history on planet earth. So please forgive the offended person, for they might need that right now. I hope they can move forward, as you are a perfect role model in moving forward. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family. Much love from Canada. Eat, laugh, love and enjoy!
